Virginia was one of the first colonies that was settled with a variety of leaders. John Smith was one of the first and possibly the greatest leaders that the early Virginia colony saw. He was originally sent out to set up Jamestown. The settlers who came with him came for gold. They were not prepared for the cold winters and the harsh conditions. He set up a rule that if you did not work you did not eat. This tough rule saved many of their lives, and he was one of the best leaders with the Indians. However, he did get captured and almost killed, but the famous Pocahontas saved him. When he had to return to England, the colonists immediately began to have bad relationships with the Indians because he was gone. Virginia saw many leaders come and go but John Smith was one of the most famous.
