New York
Middle Colony
1624
New York was once New Amsterdam. Why they changed it I can't say, I guess people just liked it better that way.
New Amsterdam was started by the Dutch, but then there was a discussion between the Dutch and the British, and the British took New Amsterdam, and named it New York, after James, the Duke of York, who was the brother of King Charles II. Before it was taken by the British, it was used for trade. After this magnificent piece of land was stolen, it was still used for trade, and even increased. The Dutch only wanted America so that they could trade valuable furs, and grow rich. The Dutch had a large portion of America before it was taken. They had Vermont, New York, New Jersey and Delaware. They named all of these New Netherlands. New York was a fertile land, and became even better, and more popular. New Amsterdam, started the history of a city with a lot of trade, which continues today.
