Roger Williams
Roger Williams was the founder of the first village in Rhode Island, Providence. Roger lived in Plymouth. When the pilgrims first came to America, most wanted to be free to practice their religion, and that's what they got at first. Soon they were forcing people to go to church, and telling them how to behave, and to only be a Protestant. They were doing the exact thing that they tried to escape from. Isn't that really ironic? Nobody thought of that, and went along with their lives, thinking they were so Godly, when really, they were being almost the opposite. Sure they believed in the Bible, and were kind to each other, as long as those people believed in the same thing they did. People would treat people like the Quakers, and Atheists horribly, and they weren't allowed in their colony. Roger Williams believed everyone should have freedom, and he preached these ideas to everyone in Massachusetts that would listen. Finally, the government of Plymouth got tired of him, and tried to send him back to England. Williams escaped, but he was lost and alone. He found a tribe of Indians, and befriended them. He bought land from them, and his family was sent to him. He named this land, Providence, which would later be the capital of Rhode Island. Rhode Island is a small bit of land, in fact, today it's the smallest state in the U.S.A. It is right next to Connecticut, and is below Massachusetts. Today, and maybe then they grew, potatoes, apples, hay, sweet corn, and in a greenhouse. Roger went through many trials, but finally, a magnificent triumph came out of the trials, in the shape of Rhode Island.
