The first city in South Carolina was Charles Town, known today as Charleston. This city is named after King Charles II, and was very large. Thousands of slaves were brought in, and each white person had at least 4 slaves. They did field work in the flat swampy places. They would plant mainly rice, which was easy to grow because of the way God created the land. Later, they planted a plant called Indigo, and you could make an interesting dye the shade of blue with that beautiful plant. Charleston is still the capital of South Carolina, unlike a large number of the other colonies.
