New Jersey
Middle Colonies
1664
New Jersey was at first part of the Netherlands, but after the Dutch surrendered New Amsterdam to England, New Jersey became an English colony. Then, the colony was renamed after the Isle of Jersey, which is in the English Channel. The Land that was captured was given to the Duke of York. Later, he gave half of New Jersey to a man named, Sir George Carteret, and the other half was sold to a man named Lord Berkeley of Stratton. New Jersey was taken over by the British, but not for long.
