Georgia
Southern Colonies
1732
Georgia was started by a man named James Oglethorpe. At the time George II was king, so James named the land after him. The reason Oglethorpe founded this land was because there were many people in England that couldn't pay their taxes, so they had to stay in prison until they could. Of course you can't work for money when you are locked up in a dungeon, so sometimes their family members had to pay for them. So James wanted to make a colony where debtors could go to instead of jail. Wouldn't that be fun, to go to a nice beautiful place, instead of a horrible, dark prison? Georgia made keeping slaves, and drinking liquor illegal. He asked for people from Europe to show the people that would come how to raise a farm. Unfortunately, not very many debtors came. They didn't want to go to Georgia, and soon, the people who did come, realized the colony was full of Indians, and those Indians had bad memories of white men. Thankfully, Oglethorpe was a good man, and made many peace treaties. However, the settlers wanted to go against Oglethorpe's wonderful rules, and own slaves, and drink liquor, and Spanish men and pirates roamed around Georgia. Oglethorpe finally gave up after he lost all his money.
